Keeping up our British spirit in the rain (and thunder)!
Without wanting to sound like a broken record, the summer weather was pretty rubbish this year, but with a bit of good ‘ol British determination we threw a steely glance at the grey storm clouds, packed a picnic (!) along with our raincoats, wellies and umbrellas and headed to Chartwell, once the home of Sir Winston Churchill and now in the care of the National Trust.
Ive wanted to visit Chartwell for so long, having spent such a large portion of my years in education studying World War II and actually to visit during a thunder storm only made the place more atmospheric. Sadly you cant take photographs in the house, so I can only recommend you go and see the place for yourself! A couple of highlights were Churchills Monet in the Drawing Room, his Study and desk featuring his glasses and of course a cigar, and the Dining Room (my favourite room in the house) built in the slightly newer extension, with floor length windows on three sides of the room and botanical print soft furnishings covering the chairs and windows. If it looked inviting on such a grey, rainy day I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the sunshine.
Churchills studio, a separate building in the gardens was another highlight, I hadnt realised he was such a prolific painter and even had work accepted into the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The double height studio walls are filled with his works, many featuring Chartwell and the gardens, all in his impressionistic style.
Gritting our teeth and gripping our umbrellas through the storm paid off and after lunch (which was a picnic in the car, thanks for that, summer) it stopped raining! Just in time for us to have a look around the gardens, which feature stone terraces with lavender lined steps, a rose garden, kitchen garden, cutting garden, lake and huge lawn, perfect for summer parties no doubt. All in all, including a visit to the shop and tea and huge chocolate brownie in the cafe, we were there for about five hours and the day completely disappeared.

I’ve had my eye out for a tutorial on how to crochet an African flower for a while; the one I ended up using didn’t seem quite right and I quickly realised the instructions didn’t match the pictures! I managed to figure it out after a bit of trial and error and now that I’ve cracked this particular crochet code, I thought I’d share this little how to with you.
African flowers are a fun alternative to the traditional granny square and I’ve seen some gorgeous things made out of them (check out this amazing stegosaurus on Holly Pips!). I’m planning to use mine for a simple cushion for our bedroom and have chosen these pastel colours to complement our mint green feature wall.
So here’s how to make one for yourself. Happy hooking!
Hook: 3.5mm
Wool: assortment of stylecraft DK
Abbreviations (pattern uses UK terms):
Chain – ch
Treble crochet – tc
Slipstitch – sl st
To start: chain 6 and slip stitch to make a circle.
Round one
Colour one. Ch3, 1tc, ch1, *2tc, ch1* repeat until you have six spaces and six 2tc, then sl st into the third chain of the beginning of the round.
Round two
Colour two. Start in one of the six ch1 spaces. Ch3 then in the same space 1tc, ch1, 2tc. *ch2, 2tc, ch1, 2tc* in next space, repeat *until you have six 4tc. Sl st into the third chain of the beginning of the round. But do not cut or change colour (which I totally did the first time, doh).
Round three
Keeping the same colour (you could change if you wish, but this is the more traditional way), sl st 2 to reach the next ch1 space from the previous round. Ch3 then 6tc in the same ch1 space, ch1. *7tc in next ch1 space, ch1, repeat *until you have six 7tc.
Round four
Colour three. Start anywhere and ch1, dc around and make a long stitch down to round 2 between each flower petal. End with a sl st into ch1.
Round five
Colour four. Join anywhere and ch3, tc around and place 2tc into the top dc of each petal. Sl st into third chain of beginning of round and fasten off.

John Tetreault, Associate Art Director 8 users recommend To cut the through-tenons on the shelves I simply clamped all of them together and used a hand saw to define the cheeks. John Tetreault A router made quick work of removing the waste between the tenon cheeks. John Tetreault When routing out the waste I nicked one of the tenons. If these were regular tenons the nick would have been hidden in the mortise, but since they are through-tenons and will be seen, I picked a similar grain from a scrap piece and made a tenon plug of sorts. John Tetreault The scrub plane sure is a fun tool to use. I adjusted the blade to take shallow cuts and deliberately lined up the scalloping with the grain for all shelves. This texture will compliment the weathered texture of the case sides. John Tetreault I marked the shelf through-tenons on the case sides and then drilled tiny holes at the four corners of the mortise location. John Tetreault From the exterior of the case sides I used a forstner bit to drill out most of the waste and then carefully squared up the mortise with a chisel. John Tetreault I cut slots on all the shelf tenons where wedges will be added later. After test fitting all the shelves, I disassembled everything and added glue to the shelf dados and a little drop on each of the tenon cheeks. Lots of clamps and cauls pulled it all together and one long clamp on opposite corners held the case square. John Tetreault I cut the dovetails for the top purposely a little tight, so no clamps were needed once it was tapped in place. You can get away with this on a softwood like pine, but I wouldnt recommend using this technique with hardwoods. Furniture Lab Tech Cabinet - Part II Follow along as Fine Woodworking associate art director John Tetreault constructs a cabinet using reclaimed materials found during our recent trek to southern Massachusetts. Things are really beginning to speed up at this point of the Tech Cabinet build. The dados for the shelves have been cut in the case sides and the dovetails have been cut to accept the top. Next, I broke out the scrub plane to surface the interior shelves. The undulating surface that the scrub plane produces mimics the weathered exterior boards of the case sides. Browse through the photos above, where I show you how I made the through-tenons on the shelves and a little trick to cut mortises on the case sides when you want to keep the original patina of the wood. Once the shelves were done, I was ready for the case glue-up. It was a little tricky with all those through-tenons, but I tackled the case first and then tapped home the dovetails on the top. Print / No winter lasts forever / Makewells - Etsy Not only is this print absolutely beautiful, it’s also fairly appropriate – anyone else already dreaming of spring? When will the rain end?! I love its deeper meaning too and of course the pretty font and flower decorations.
Duvet cover / h&m home I really should know better by now – browsing the new h&m home collection is a danger to my bank balance. And here’s what I’m coveting this time – a gorgeous floral duvet set, complete with my favourite colour and hummingbirds! We saw hummingbirds in Barbados and they really are amazing creatures, interestingly they’re much smaller than I’d imagined but fascinating to watch. This is going straight on my birthday list.
